Windsong Womyn's Ensemble performs June 4

You heard them at the Variety Show and you've seen them at Pride, now celebrate with the Windsong Womyn's Ensemble in their premiere concert Saturday, June 4, 8 pm at the Ursuline College Little Theatre, Mullen Building on Lander Rd., between Cedar and Fairmount. Tickets for the concert are $5 and will be available at the door.

The Windsong Womyn's Ensemble began as a pick-up choir performing for the Womyn's Variety Show and occasional political events. The Ensemble gained members and creative energy with Gayle Pilat as conductor. (Remember the Morale Chorale at the '93 Variety Show?) This past Fall

office has received a complaint-singular." Sheriff Simon Leis Jr. acknowledged the lone complaint but said his office could investigate possible obscenity violations even if no complaint were filed.

"I think it should have gone before a grand jury, to let the citizens of the community make the decision....If the grand jury determined it was OK, I wouldn't have any problem with it," Leis said.

Police Chief Michael Snowden had called for a grand jury investigation to determine whether the play's content might violate community standards for obscenity.

Deters would not say whether he had seen the play. Leis said he saw a videotape of the entire production.

Leis received national attention as county prosecutor in 1977 when he prosecuted Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt in an obscenity case. He also prosecuted gay radio show host John Zeh for a 1981 on-air discussion of sexual lubricants that the FCC said was not obscene.

David A. White III, the Ensemble's artistic director, welcomed Deters' announcement.

Diane Hobus stepped into Gayle's shoes | and has conducted the Ensemble for the | Holiday Fest and the '94 Variety Show.

The premiere concert will feature a variety of songs and musical styles. Hobus and the Ensemble have been building a repertoire highlighted with songs composed by women from northern Ohio. Members will also sing solos, and Hobus, winner of the Lesbian-Gay Community Service Center 1992 Talent Show, will perform a selection on the piano.

For more information call Gayle at 921-7328 (Cleveland) or Diane at 867-5467 (Akron).

"We're certainly very happy that we can continue, going back to what we're here to do, and that is present a piece of art," White said. "I'm very happy that the city of Cincinnati will not receive a national black eye... We, as artists, love the city."

The theater is not admitting anyone under 18 to the play.

The Rev. George Heartwell, who helped oversee recent elections in South Africa, said he's witnessed what can happen when a powerful majority oppresses a minority. "I've seen the cost of that sort of opposition firsthand, and I'm convinced that it must not happen here," he said. "This is a civil rights issue. This is not about a lifestyle or family values."

Opponents said they hoped to get enough petition signatures to bar the city from enacting the law or to put the issue before voters. They would need to collect about 14,000 signatures, or 12 percent of registered voters, within 30 days.
